UK Mobile phone deals
The UK mobile phone industry has grown rapidly during the last twenty years and, despite a global economic downturn, it seems likely that this trend will continue long into the future. This is because mobile phones have become essential to everyday life – from making calls and texting friends to snapping photos and playing audio and video files. Indeed, mobile phones are often the source of much entertainment as well as a useful means of communication.
Not long ago, consumers were content with mobile phones that simply sent text messages and connected calls without any problems. Nowadays, the demand for technologically advanced devices with increased functionality and gadgetry has stimulated significant growth and development in the market. To reflect this trend, the mobile phone manufacturers are constantly producing improved models whilst mobile phone providers are offering bigger and better deals.
To fully appreciate where the mobile phone market is heading, it is necessary to look at where it began, in relative terms, and where it is now. In 1996, Motorola launched the first clamshell phone in the form of the StarTac, whilst in 2000 Nokia released the 3310, which went on to become a hugely successful phone. The key ingredients behind the success of both phones were style and functionality.
In today`s market, style and functionality remain key to cutting edge products such as the Motorola Q 9h, Apple iPhone 3G and Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition. Nevertheless, consumers also demand more for their money and so providers must balance the cost of new technology with affordability. In order to achieve this, there are three options available when purchasing a new mobile: SIM-free, contract and pay as you go.
SIM-free phones are simply the handsets without a tariff and are, quite understandably, the most expensive option for consumers. Pay as you go phones are somewhat cheaper as they include a SIM card for a particular network, such as T-Mobile, 3, O2, Orange and Vodafone. For example, a Nokia 6300 is around £90-100 SIM-free but only £60-70 with a pay as you go SIM-card. A greater difference will be noticed with higher specification phones, which are best suited to contract deals.
Purchasing a mobile phone on a contract usually involves a significant handset price reduction or, more often, the phone is provided for free when the customer signs a 12-18 month contract. The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition, for example, is available for free on all major networks at monthly costs starting from £15. The monthly fee includes a specific quantity of texts and talktime minutes, which make certain contract deals far more appealing than pay as you go alternatives. Furthermore, free gifts are often bundled with a contract phone to `sweeten the deal` – ultimately, network providers benefit from regular users.
In conclusion, there are many types of mobile phone deals on the market and one will almost certainly be right for you - but always ensure that phone reviews are checked before making a purchase.
